Addiction as a coping mechanism
Firstly, we must understand why people use drugs. People use drugs to alter their mood, to be happier
than usual. Then we must understand what the coping mechanism is. Coping mechanisms are when
people face problems and how to deal with a problem is known as coping mechanism.
So, when people are in drug addiction and when they face any problem, the drug user uses drugs to
escape those feelings. Personally, as an ex-drug user I used drugs when I used to have quarrels with my
family. I used drugs as a ventilation method to escape those feelings and take my mind off the problem.
And this happened like a cage for me. This used to happen again and again, and I couldn’t escape this
cage.
Then there are pre addictive behaviors, the behaviors which a person shows before being an addictive
person which include rigidness, stubbornness. An addictive person uses a lot of defense mechanisms to
cope up with problems he faces while using drugs. Defense mechanisms such as rationalization,
projection etc.
