I was a drug addict but fortunately now I am a recovery addict. Hero and Health care organization was considerate enough to take me in. What pinches me the most is that there are lots and lots of rehabilitation centers for male addicts but, unfortunately, there is not even a single rehab center for all girls only. Why is it considered a social taboo to admit daughters or mothers?
Women and girls are the ones who carry generations with them. My question is that why are they taken for granted?? Why is it considered a social taboo to admit daughters or mothers? Why is their counseling considered so bad?? If someone is suffering from heart disease, he or she is immediately taken to a cardiologist. If someone has cholesterol, diabetes or sugar, that someone is taken to the concerned doctors as soon as possible. Then why hide the mental illness or drug addiction?
I was the only girl in the rehab center because I am blessed with the most supporting family ever, THE ONLY GIRL… It makes me wonder what is wrong with our society? Brain is the most vital part of our body that controls the entire function of our body. Given that, what is so embarrassing or shameful in seeking help from the experienced psychologists or counselors? This decade is about to finish… We are entering a new decade …2020 is about to arrive… when will we change our thinking???
I am not embarrassed at all to tell that I sought help and with the grace of Allah almighty and with the support and care of my family, I am sober now. I was a heroin addict but now i am working on my recovery. When a car doesn’t function properly, we take it to the mechanic, get it checked and we repair it… Taking help from professionals is the logical and rational thing to do… We need to realize the gravity of this situation and we need to change our thinking about it as it is high time to do so.
