Spiritual Healing: The Role of Faith in Addiction Recovery
Faith is a powerful tool. It has the power to heal us when we are completely lost and broken. It gives people hope and allows them to forgive themselves but also others; which are two fundamental things during your recovery. Once you integrate faith into your recovery, it gives you hope and allows you to look forward in your life. Here are some ways that faith helps in addiction recovery:
- It can give you a connection- Sometimes you may feel alone in your recovery process and that those around you aren’t understanding your path as you wish- but once you have a spiritual connection to God, it can remind you that he hears you, sees you, appreciates you, and understands every bit of you. This connection gives you the courage to keep going.
- It can keep you grounded- Faith gives us roles and responsibilities to fulfill in our life. When we are feeling lost, this can keep us grounded while also reminding us of what we can do to live a purposeful life. It can give us direction and clarity about how we should be spending our time in this world- with accountability and awareness about the real purpose (our hereafter).
- It can help you forgive- Often times when addicts are going through recovery, they can feel a lot of shame and guilt for doing the things they did. Faith is a tool for them that helps them realize that God loves them and wants the best for them, and is ready to forgive them whenever they ask for it. He loves it when his people turn back to him for help.
- It can help you become confident- Those who fall into addiction can feel insecure about themselves and their personality because of the social stigma around addicts. However, when they begin building a relationship with God and faith, they gradually become more confident as they learn that everyone has shortcomings- it’s just about healing, asking for forgiveness, staying hopeful and motivating yourself to keep pushing.
We believe in the power of faith in recovery because we have seen the success it brings to our client’s lives. In our programs, we integrate faith to ensure patients are building a good relationship with their creator to heal themselves.
